Teens-and-Smoking Fact Sheet

Here’s some info about what we’ve learned about teens and smoking. You’ve got your own ideas—
and those are what we want to see and hear.

Here are some thought-starters:

• Kids who smoke like the idea that they’re breaking the rules
• Most kids who smoke like the way it makes them appear to be independent; some are rebels
who like taking risks
• Peer pressure is still a big deal—kids want to fit in

Here’s what your TV message has to do:

• Make teens think about what they’re doing when they smoke
• Plant the idea that smoking isn’t cool, smart or the popular thing to do
• Deliver the idea quickly—you’ve only got 30 seconds to get through

Here’s what you can win:

• A chance to be involved in the production of the TV commercial, start to finish
• A field trip to a Philadelphia production studio
• Your TV commercial—live—on the air!
• Gift certificates for music and movies
