STEP 1

Get a group of Teens together or have them work individually.

The objective:

To create an idea for a TV commercial that will get other teens
to quit or never start smoking.

Remind your teens to:

  • Keep the message simple—you only have 30 seconds to tell the story

  • Consider all of the anti-smoking messages they’ve seen—decide what worked and didn’t work for them

  • Think of what visuals, words or ideas would convince them not to smoke

  • Use their personal experiences

  • Visualize how the spot would look and how expensive it would be to produce—a big-budget idea may not be possible to produce

  • Have fun

STEP 2

Write a script that will get Teens to stop smoking

You’ll want to write out your ideas of what we’ll be seeing in the “video” portion of the script and what we’ll be hearing in the “audio” portion. It’s not necessary to have audio—
in fact, the winner from the first year kept the idea so simple, there wasn’t any audio except sound effects. Try timing how long the spot will take. Try to get as close to 30 seconds as possible. Also, feel free to draw pictures or include photos that will help illustrate your idea. Do whatever you think is most effective.

Here is a Script Form. Please make copies to hand out.

STEP 3

Complete the permission slip and have it signed by parents or guardians.

You can find a copy of the permission slip in the pocket on the opposite page.
Make as many copies as you need.

STEP 4

Complete the Registration Form for each entry

Groups should use just one entry form. These can also be found in the pocket on the opposite page.

Note: If you’re working in a group, please staple together registration and permission slips for all members of the group for each commercial entry and submit in one envelope.

STEP 5

Mail your entry by April 8, 2005, to:
